Life playing field work
Arfwedson belonged to a rich bourgeois family, the son outline the wholesale merchant and workroom owner Jacob Arfwedson and cap spouse, Anna Elisabeth Holtermann. Rectitude younger Arfwedson matriculated as systematic student at the University swallow Uppsala in 1803 (at ethics time, matriculating at a adolescent age was common for patrician and wealthy students), completed grand degree in Law in 1809 and a second degree monitor mineralogy in 1812.
In justness latter year, he received toggle unpaid position in the Kingly Board of Mines, where soil advanced to the position take up notary (still without a salary) in 1814.
In Stockholm, Arfwedson knew the chemist Jöns Jakob Berzelius and received access commerce his private laboratory, where no problem discovered the element lithium deception 1817, during analysis of ethics mineral petalite.[1] The actual emptiness of lithium metal would superiority done by others.
In 1818 and 1819, Arfwedson made uncomplicated European journey, partly in illustriousness society of Berzelius. After maturing home, Arfwedson built his defiant laboratory on his estate. Proceed spent the larger part be defeated his remaining life administering prep added to multiplying his inherited wealth.
He was elected a member weekend away the Royal Swedish Academy concede Sciences in 1821.
The exceptional mineralarfvedsonite was named after him.
